Outdoor Living...in the Winter

When the days are shorter and the temperatures are colder, you may find yourself staring out the window into your backyard while dreaming of spring. Just because it’s the middle of winter doesn’t mean you have to hibernate inside all season! Here are some suggestions for continuing your outdoor living even in the colder months.

Gather Around the Fire

Even when it’s chilly out, you can still enjoy the crisp, fresh air without getting too cold. These solutions offer plenty of heat in a variety of ways to suit you.

  • Fire Pits—You can get as rustic, as fancy, or as in-between as you’d like with the all fire pit options these days. Fire pits are an affordable, convenient way to enjoy any outdoor space.

  • Fire Tables—More like furniture than most fire pits, but still capturing the same vibe, gas fire tables can range from bar-top to coffee table styles and come in a range of sizes.

  • Fireplaces—These are the closest you’ll get to accomplish that indoor look and feel with fire outdoors. Outdoor fireplaces can be wood or gas, and can also serve as a visual centerpiece in your backyard area.

  • Grill—Even if you don’t have a full outdoor kitchen, you can still bring your cooking to the backyard with a charcoal or gas grill. Having that wonderful flavor and bringing people together for a cookout doesn’t have to be reserved just for the warmer months.

Warm up With Space Heaters

Much like a fireplace but even more so, heaters can be the closest thing to getting that indoor-heat source feel. Much like fireplaces, outdoor heaters can be decorative and functional. From tabletop and lamp styles to standing and hanging varieties, propane heaters are often portable and convenient.

Cozy up With Accessories

One way to help take the chill off when spending time outdoors is to bring a little of the indoors outside with you. By using accessories that you also use indoors—perhaps ones that are made for outdoors, though—you can stay warm and feel comfy.

  • Lighting—Lighting can help to add warmth to an area. Think about stringing bulbs over your pergola, across your deck and patio, and around walls. Lanterns and sconces can also add a bright but warm ornamental touch to an outdoor area.

  • Shades—You might think about needing shades in the summer to avoid the direct sunlight, but vertical shades can pull double duty to help keep out the wind when you’re outside in the chillier times.

  • Blankets and Furniture—Adding throws and pillows to a seating area outside can instantly increase the cozy factor. Having furniture that’s suitable for colder weather is also important when you consider enjoying your backyard year-round. Consider adding cushions or pillows to wall seating and harder surfaces to make them more comfortable when it’s cold.
