Falling for Fire Pits

Article Written By: Jordan E Raley

As the temps in Chattanooga are slowly starting to ease their way down, many are gearing up for Football tailgates, s’mores and cider, and bonding by the fire. As such, Full Circle is here to discuss your fire pit needs so you too can get cozy outdoors this Fall season.

Fire pits come in an array of options, such as permanent vs. portable, gas vs. wood, chimeneas vs. fire bowl. With so many options and styles, how you do decide which type of fire pit is best for you? First, consider how you plan to use it. Then, once you land on what is best for your situation, do not forget the following:

  • Ensure whatever style you decide on, it is not placed under any foliage, next to any fences, and at least 10 feet away from your home or any other structures

  • Check to make sure you’re close to a water source (garden hose water bucket, etc.) for extinguishing

  • If building down into the ground instead of on top, first check to make sure you won’t dig into any tree roots, septic pipes, electric or gas lines

Permanent fire pits are great additions to any outdoor space. They add a functional and relaxing atmosphere to any area, especially when creating a patio or other sitting space. In creating a permanent fire pit, make sure you select proper stones and materials that are fire resistant, won’t splinter or crack with the heat and elements, and coordinate so your fire pit and home are in harmony. Once materials are selected, measure the area to guarantee enough space to safely move around the pit and provide proper air circulation.

For portable fire pits such as chimeneas or bowls, these simple accompaniments create ambiance with ease, though they don’t pack quite the heat as a permanent pit. These portable pits can be moved when needed so you can take the homey vibes with you should you decide to move or redesign your outdoor space. They have easy set up and can be sourced via natural gas, propane, or wood.
